About the Green Party

Caroline Lucas made history by becoming the first ever Green Party MP in May 2010.

The last time a UK political party had an MP elected for the first time was in 1892, when Keir Hardie was elected as an Independent Socialist. The policies he put forward: votes for women, progressive taxation, free schools, pensions, and the abolition of the House of Lords, have all now been implemented, with the exception of the last.

The Green Party was formed in 1973, to raise concerns about energy security, the environment, and social inequality. Green politics is of a new and radical kind, guided by simple but fundamental principles:

  • Humankind depends on the diversity of the natural world for its existence. We do not believe that other species are expendable.
  • The Earth's physical resources are finite. We threaten our future if we try to live beyond those means, so we must build a sustainable society that guarantees our long-term future.
  • Our actions should take account of the well-being of other nations, other species, and future generations. We should not pursue our well-being to the detriment of theirs.
